Doral unveils McLean-designed golf course

In terms of Doral Resort & Golf Club courses, Silver Course didn't bring up images of second best as much as the thought of tarnished. That's why Doral tapped renowned golf instructor Jim McLean to redesign what was reintroduced Friday as The Jim McLean Signature Course at Doral.

``The course had been left a little bit,'' McLean said Friday. ``It was kind of like the stepchild over there. It just was not in good shape.''

Latham Marine, key boat industry supplier, not untouched by recession

Latham Marine, a small manufacturing company in Fort Lauderdale, may not be a household word, but its products are found on some of the fastest racing boats in the world and on high-performance and pleasure craft, as well as military and law enforcement patrol boats.

Owned by Bob Latham and his wife, Kathy, Latham Marine designs, manufactures and sells original equipment and replacement parts to the marine industry.

Over the years, the company has evolved from a boat-repair business, to a racing-boat shop, and to the design and manufacturing firm that it is today. It supplies everything from hydraulic steering systems to rudders and marine hardware, equipment and accessories made at two facilities in Fort Lauderdale.

NASCAR drivers come up short in 24-hour Daytona race

While Action Express Racing pulled off a major upset in Sunday's Rolex 24 at Daytona, NASCAR regulars did not fare as well as in previous years in the 24-hour endurance race at Daytona International Speedway.

Joao Barbosa, Terry Borcheller, Ryan Dalziel and Mike Rockenfeller drove the No.9 Porsche Riley Daytona Prototype (DP) for the upstart team, which made its debut in a major auto racing event. Barbosa drove the car in the final leg and finished 50 seconds ahead of Chip Ganassi Racing's No.01 BMW Riley team.

"This is so much sweeter," said Barbosa, who previously won the 24-hour Daytona event in the Grand Touring (GT) class.

NASCAR finishing season full speed at Homestead

Racing fans will be out in full force in Homestead this weekend to watch a trio of series finale races that will determine NASCAR's newest champions.

Homestead-Miami Speedway is hosting Ford Championship Weekend, which features the Camping World Truck, Nationwide and Sprint Cup series championships.

The speedway is flying high this year.

Whitman and Dorsett repeat in the SKUD 18 class at the Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta

Scott Whitman and crew Julia Dorsett overcame a restart and a trailing trap line Friday to repeat as champions in the SKUD 18 class at the Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta on Biscayne Bay.

Whitman, of Brick, N.J., and Dorsett, a part-time Boca Raton resident, are mounting a campaign for the 2012 Paralympic Games for disabled athletes in London. They completed the 10-race regatta that ran Monday through Friday with a score of 14 -- seven points ahead of runners-up J.P. Creignou and Jennifer French, both of St. Petersburg.

Other Paralympic class champions Friday: Canada's Paul Tingley in the 2.4 Metre class and Norway's Aleksander Wang-Hansen and crew Per Eugen Kristiansen and Marie Solberg in Sonars.
