A two-man team of veteran racers made it two in a row in Sunday's final of the Key West World Championship powerboat races.
Driver Johnny Stanch of Westmont, N.J., and throttleman Peter Meyer of Port Washington, N.Y., repeated as world champions in the Superboat Vee Unlimited class aboard Seminole Hard Rock. The team led wall-to-wall in its six-boat fleet in the three-race series that opened Wednesday.
Seminole Hard Rock, a 40-foot Fountain with twin 710-horsepower engines, averaged 92.38 mph over the 72.8-mile course in Sunday's final to finish in 47:17, less than a minute ahead of runner-up Davis Motorsports, a 40-foot Phantom with twin 800s.
Miccosukee Indian Gaming scored a repeat victory in the Superboat Stock class, beating runner-up Stihl by only 13 seconds Sunday. It was the ninth world championship win for Miccosukee owner/throttleman Gary Ballough of Boca Raton and the 14th for driver Paul Whittier of Yarrow Point, Wash. In the next race, Whittier made it 15, driving Super Cat-class Team Amsoil to a checkered flag with throttleman Bob Teague of Valencia, Calif.
Sunday's fastest boat was Miss Geico, running alone in the Turbine class. Driver Marc Granet of St. Petersburg Beach and throttleman Scott Begovich of Jupiter averaged 116.46 mph over the 79-mile course. A fleet of 50 boats competed.
