Coral Gables makes playoffs

Similar stories:

For the fourth year in a row, Coral Gables is heading to the playoffs -- and hoping for a different outcome.

Jarvis Bridge rushed for 225 yards, Patrick McCain threw for 108 and the Cavaliers clinched the second seed in District 14-6A with a 31-14 victory over South Miami Saturday night at Tropical Park.

Coral Gables (5-4, 4-1) will face Northwestern next week in the first round. The Cavaliers have been eliminated in the first round three years in a row.

``I think these kids have worked so hard -- [they've] overcome injuries, overcome having to play both ways throughout the season -- and they deserve this,'' Cavaliers coach Joe Montoya said. ``The coaches have done a tremendous job of preparing the kids, too.''

Despite falling behind by two scores in the first six minutes, South Miami (2-6, 2-3) trailed just 17-14 early in the second half after a 48-yard touchdown run by Jaccare Givens, who finished with 108 yards.

But Coral Gables answered quickly with a 28-yard touchdown pass from McCain to Shaquille Cooper, followed by a 94-yard scamper by Bridge on the Cavs' next possession. -- ALDEN GONZALEZ

Dade Christian 51, Archbishop Curley 28: Leading by just two going into the final quarter, Dade Christian (6-4, 4-2 District 8-1A) broke open a close game with three fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull away from host Archbishop Curley (2-7, 1-5).

With Westminister's victory over Marathon, the Crusaders were eliminated from the playoffs for the first time in four years.

``We were pretty flat and uninspired in the first half,'' said Dade Christian coach Mike Sonneborn. ``It was a tough week, though, getting the kids up for this because after making the playoffs for four straight years and having very little chance of making it this year, it was unchartered territory for these kids. Overall it was a good season.''

Dade Christian was led by running back Chris Elliot who racked up 155 yards on 19 carries and three touchdowns as the Crusaders offense rolled up 317 yards on the ground and 422 total.
