GAINESVILLE -- Three Florida players were named semifinalists for major national awards Wednesday.
Quarterback Tim Tebow made the list for the Maxwell Award, given to the nation's best player, and linebacker Brandon Spikes was named to the final 16 for the Chuck Bednarik Award for best defensive player.
Cornerback Joe Haden is one of 12 semifinalists for the Jim Thorpe Award for best defensive back. His achievement is especially impressive considering he played quarterback in high school.
After switching to defense, he has been a three-year starter and is projected as a top-10 prospect for the NFL Draft by ESPN's Scouts, Inc.
All this would have been hard for Haden to imagine a few years ago.
``When I first went to corner, I didn't really know what to expect,'' he said. ``Since I have started learning the game and knowing what's going on, I knew I had the ability to play corner but I didn't know it would be to this extreme, honestly. I feel like every time I watch film I can get so much better and have so much room for improvement.''
Coach Urban Meyer also was named a semifinalist for the George Munger Award, given to the coach of the year.
