FIU women's soccer team sets school marks

ppelegrin@MiamiHerald.com

The FIU women's soccer team broke into the NCAA South Region Poll at No. 10 this week.

With their two wins against Arkansas-Little Rock and Arkansas State this past weekend, the Golden Panthers (10-5-3, 8-1-1 Sun Belt) took over first place in the Sun Belt standings and broke a pair of school records.

FIU set a record for most wins during the conference season with its 1-0 victory against the Trojans and surpassed the mark for longest winning streak with its sixth consecutive win in Sunday's 3-2 victory against ASU.

In each of the past three seasons, the Panthers have increased their win totals in the Sun Belt. FIU won just one conference game in 2007 and four games last season.

``As a coaching staff, we're excited about the progress the program has made,'' women's soccer coach Thomas Chestnutt said. ``We're going into the last game challenging for first place in the conference. That's a credit to our staff, to the players who have been here and how hard they continue to work, and what they've done this year. We still have to fight forward because the next opponent doesn't care about what you've done in the past.''

If the Panthers can hold on to the top spot, they will become the first team in the league to jump from sixth to first in consecutive seasons.

Junior Yesica Rojas was selected as Women's Sun Belt Swimmer of the Week, and freshman Jamie Stinson earned Women's Sun Belt Diver of the Week.

Rojas had her best performance of the season this past Saturday against Florida Gulf Coast by taking first place in the 100 butterfly event with a team season-best time of 59.58. She also placed second in the 200 butterfly in 2:12.79, which is also an FIU best for the year.

Stinson took first place on the 3-meter springboard for the second consecutive meet, recording a score of 212.25. She also placed second on the 1-meter springboard with a mark of 210.60.

MIAMI DADE COLLEGE

The Miami Dade College women's volleyball team (25-4) captured the Southern Conference championship this week with a 12-0 conference record. It was the fourth consecutive season that the Sharks went through the conference undefeated.

The Sharks, ranked No. 7, will compete for the Atlantic District title Nov. 5-7 in Winter Haven. Capturing the Atlantic District title will qualify the Sharks for the national championship tournament in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

MDC is led by Sandra Montoya, who was named the Southern Conference Player of the Year, and freshman hitter Yenifer Calcano, a Southern Conference first-team selection. Defensive specialist Joy Barquin and setter/hitter Miami Hajdukovic were also selected to the first team.

The Sharks men's basketball team begins the season ranked No. 2 in the Florida Community College Athletic Association Poll.

Miami Dade is coming off a 26-3 season and a No. 3 national ranking in 2008-2009.

The MDC women's basketball team enters the 2009-1010 season as the No. 10 team in Florida.

NOVA SOUTHEASTERN

Two Nova Southeastern women's soccer players were selected to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District 3 Teams.

Elizabeth Brauher was named to the first team, and Lindsey Nowland earned a spot on the second team.

With her First-Team Academic All-District selection, Brauher is eligible for Academic All-America honors, which will be announced Nov. 17.
