TALLAHASSEE -- Saying that he refuses to give up, embattled Florida State coach Bobby Bowden told reporters on a conference call Sunday that he is undeterred despite the Seminoles' poor start.
After falling 28-21 on Saturday at Boston College, the Seminoles have lost two consecutive games in which they were favored, and they are 2-3 for the first time in more than 25 years. FSU also is 0-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play for the first time since joining the conference in 1992.
``You can't give up,'' Bowden said. ``That's the thing about it -- you can't give up. I refuse to.''
This isn't Bowden's first time under fire at Florida State. When the Seminoles struggled to a 7-6 record in 2006, he was pressured into letting his youngest son, Jeff, resign from his position as offensive coordinator. In the next year, the Seminoles' entire offensive coaching staff was replaced.
But after a promising 2008 campaign -- FSU went 9-4, with a convincing victory against Wisconsin in the Champs Sports Bowl -- Bowden's team appears to be on the skids again. One week after scoring only seven points in a stunning home loss to South Florida, the Seminoles found themselves trailing 21-3 in the first half at Boston College.
They rallied to tie the game at 21-21, but FSU's defense faltered again down the stretch, allowing BC tailback Montel Harris to score from 42 yards out in the final minutes.
The university's long-term plan is for Bowden to retire by the end of the 2010 season, at which time offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher will be named the coach. But fans and media have begun calling for that transition to come sooner than that.
Asked Sunday about the unrest, Bowden said he tries to tune it out.
``I won't listen. I don't do a lot of reading when we are doing bad,'' he said. ``I will tell Florida State University when my move is to come.
``I already know in the back of my mind when I want to leave here. I won't let some guy's speculation tell me when to move or what decision to make. If it has something to do with that, it will be based with me and the president of our university.''
