Colleges lobbying for Blanche Ely hoops star Alicia DeVaughn

The best-laid offensive plans by opponents often result in another Alicia DeVaughn block party.

DeVaughn, a Blanche Ely 6-5 senior and No. 57 prospect by ESPN HoopGurlz 100, creates such havoc as a shot-blocker that her presence alone often leads to opponents being whistled for traveling violations and three-second calls.

It is that unique game-altering ability that has perennial Top 20 programs Maryland, Purdue, Louisville, Oklahoma, Georgia and others jockeying for DeVaughn.

DeVaughn's recruitment starts in earnest with Maryland making an in-house visit Sept. 16.

Tigers girls coach Tommie Butts also confirmed DeVaughn has scheduled an official visit to the Terrapins on Sept. 24 and will host Purdue on Sept. 30.

Rated the No. 3 prospect in Florida behind Fort Lauderdale Dillard star point guard Dawnn Maye (32) and Titusville Astronaut 6-2 forward Deaundra Young (48), DeVaughn is also in the process of setting up visits with Georgia, Oklahoma and Louisville.

``Alicia has been getting hit from over 30 colleges,'' Butts said. ``Once she commits it will be a relief. That way she can go into the season concentrating on basketball and hopefully help us advance to states.''

DeVaughn spent her first three seasons at South Broward, where her shot-blocking and rebounding played a key role in the Bulldogs' run to the Class 6A title two seasons ago.

As a junior, DeVaughn averaged 17.8 points, 18 rebounds and six blocks to earn her second consecutive selection to the Miami Herald's All-Broward first team before catching many by surprise with her transfer to Ely this past Spring.

Although Dillard and Nova are heavily favored to earn the two playoff qualifying spots in District 16-5A, the addition of DeVaughn to a team known for its defensive toughness could give the Tigers a say in the matter.
