Once Jelani Hewitt dribbles over halfcourt and gets defenders back-pedaling, they are at his mercy.
The 6-2 Northeast star guard went on one of his patented scoring streaks before an audience that included Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers and former NBA players Anthony Bowie and Darrell Armstrong, and won MVP at the Next Level Top 24 boys' basketball showcase at Orlando Wekiva High School on Saturday night.
Hewitt, who is looking to build on a junior season when he averaged a career-high 26 points and earned a selection to the Class 5A All-State first team, finished with a game-high 29 points to lead Team Deliver over Team Elevate 117-104.
“When I got in the rhythm, my teammates started feeding me the ball,’’ Hewitt, who finished with six three-pointers said. “Once I get aggressive, I stay aggressive.”
Winning MVP in a game stacked with nationally-ranked players should help Hewitt’s recruitment which picks up with official visits to Auburn, UAB and Tulsa in the upcoming weeks.
“This is good to have on my resume,’’ Hewitt said. “I got MVP of the All-Star game. Now I have even more confidence going into my season. People are going to see that and want to give me their best.’’
When Hewitt wasn’t firing from long-range, Patrick Young, a Jacksonville Providence Christian 6-8 forward headed to Florida was dominating inside. Young, who showed flashes of his power and athleticism by winning the dunk contest at halftime, finished with 17 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots.
Austin Rivers (ranked No. 2 in the 2011 class by ESPN) added 13 points and Bradenton IMG’s Dwight Powell had 12 points and six rebounds.
Doc Rivers, who came to support his son Austin, served as a celebrity judge for the dunk contest. Bowie coached Team Deliver while Armstrong led Team Elevate.
Flanagan 6-7 forward Khyle Marshall (19 points) and Providence’s Stacey Poole (18 points) did all they could to keep Team Elevate in the game, but ultimately, the absence of Pine Crest guard Brandon Knight, the nation’s No. 1 recruit in the 2010 class, who is recovering from a leg injury and watched from the stands, proved too much to overcome.
