Santa Cruz to miss out for Paraguay

The Sports Network

Blackburn Rovers striker Roque Santa Cruz will miss Paraguay's World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Peru after picking up a hamstring injury in Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Manchester United.

Santa Cruz limped off the field after 49 minutes and, after talks between the club's medical staff and Paraguay, was given permission to remain in England.

Rovers chairman John Williams told the Evening Telegraph: "It's a deja-vu really. He was injured after the West Ham game earlier this season but was made to travel to Paraguay anyway.

"It's a crazy situation where they can insist he goes away just so they can assess him themselves.

"This time it looks as though everyone has seen sense and he will stay with us."

The 27-year-old found the net 19 times in the Premier League last term but has scored only twice so far this season - in the victories at Everton and Newcastle.
