Washington, D.C. (Sports Network) - D.C. United acquired goalie Steve Cronin on loan from the Portland Timbers of the United Soccer Leagues on Monday.

First-choice goalkeeper Josh Wicks was injured in United's 2-0 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes on Sept. 27 when he dislocated his shoulder and strained his MCL on a play in the second half.

Although the league's roster window is closed, D.C. was granted permission to add Cronin because of a case of extreme hardship.

Cronin, 26, was originally drafted by San Jose with the 10th pick in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft, but did not play for the Earthquakes. He played 28 games with Los Angeles from 2005-08.

With Portland in 2009, Cronin played 28 games, earning 10 shutouts and a 0.68 goals-against average to win USL-1 Goalkeeper of the Year.

From 1998-2003, Cronin spent time with the United States U-17, U-18 and U-20 national teams.
