South Florida fishing report
BEST BET
Captain Lou Brubaker out of Islamorada reported catches of 25 or more Spanish mackerel in less than two hours fishing the Gulf, along with tripletail that are holding next to buoy markers. Brubaker suggests casting live pinfish and crabs at the boundary markers targeting cobia, tripletail, goliath grouper and permit. . . . Phil Kane of Kansas and Bill Pruitt of Miami fished with captain Alan Sherman of Get Em Sportfishing Charters in Biscayne Bay and caught lots of Spanish mackerel up to 6 ½ pounds, plus jacks, bluerunners, snapper and sea trout.
MIAMI-DADE/BROWARD
Captain Bouncer Smith of Bouncers Dusky out of Miami Beach Marina reported that sailfish action is picking up off of Miami and his clients have enjoyed steady catches of kingfish, Spanish mackerel, blackfin and skip jack tuna, an assortment of jacks, snappers and a few dolphins. . . . Miamians Dan Hellers, John Keller and Margot Chomat fished with captain Trey Claus of the charter boat Qualifier out of Miami and released seven sailfish. They also landed 12 dolphin in 125 feet of water off of Key Biscayne. . . . Robert Dinussi of New York and Greg Russell of Pennsylvania fished with captain Jimmy David and Neil Orange Sr. on the charter boat L&H out of Crandon Park Marina and released two sailfish off of Key Biscayne. Both sailfish are to be used for a Gray's Taxidermy replica mount.
KEYS
Atlanta Braves pitcher Tim Hudson and his wife, Kim, fished with captain Dexter Simmons of Key West Fly Fishing Charters and caught and released a 24-pound permit and a 6-pound bonefish. . . . Melissa Cinquina and her daughter, Maddy, of Cincinnati fished with captain Chris Johnson on the charter boat SeaSquared out of Marathon on the bayside and caught mangrove, mutton, yellowtail snappers, cero mackerel and porgies. . . . Captain Bill Hauck on the party boat Sea King out of Marathon reported a great bite of 4-pound yellowtails, mutton snappers and a few kingfish fishing in 100 feet of water on the reef. . . . Fishing the Mad Dog Mandich Fishing Classic out of Islamorada, captain Brian Cone on the charter boat Contagious led anglers Don Seifel of Connecticut, Ed Stevens and Bill Keller of Islamorada and Shannon Attales of Key Largo to first place with a catch of kingfish and tunas totaling 70.3 pounds.
TREASURE COAST
Captain Charlie Conner of FishTales Charters out of Port St. Lucie reported excellent sea trout action on the grass flats in the Bear Point, Queens Cove and Round Island area. Small mutton snappers have been plentiful in the inlet, lots of Spanish mackerel and pompano are in the river, and on the deeper flats near the Power Plant. . . . Captain Tom Van Horn of Mosquito Coast Fishing Charters reported lots of mullet moving south along the beaches, and anglers are catching snook, flounder, Spanish mackerel, jacks and bluefish around the jetties. Large tarpon are feeding on the Atlantic menhaden schools outside the beaches and cobia and tripletail can still be found on the surface in 40-foot depths.
SOUTHWEST COAST
Captain Chris McCubbin of Naples Panga Fishing Charters reported that pilchards along the beaches have attracted a lot of attention from nice-sized snook, and his anglers have released up to 60 snook on live pilchards. In Estero Bay, McCubbins has been finding plenty of nice redfish, bluefish and gag groupers. In the Gulf waters, kingfish, bonitos, Spanish mackerel and cobia are available.
FLORIDA BAY
Captain Bob LeMay reported huge amounts of small baitfish are holding along the Gulf shorelines and can be easily cast-netted and then fished for Spanish mackerel in open water and redfish, snook and small tarpon along the mangrove shorelines. . . . Miamians Fred Fosselman, his son, Joe, and Rolando Berdion fished with captain Pete Silot of Saltwater Junkie Fishing Charters and caught and released bull redfish up to 38 pounds, plus Spanish mackerel, snook, snapper and trout fishing the Gulf and Florida Bay.
FRESHWATER
Michael Shellen of Shellen Guide Service in Okeechobee reported daily trips are producing up to 40 largemouth bass up to 8 pounds on live shiners, flukes and soft plastics in the heavy cover areas of the North Shore and the Monkey Box. . . . Don and Sandra Blake of Homestead fished with captain Jim Anson of Miami and caught 49 peacock bass up to 5 pounds on fly, spin, plug and general tackle at a lake in South Miami.
