South Florida fishing report

IslamoradaSportfishing.com reported that Spanish mackerel are in the Gulf waters, along with tripletail and a few cobias. Offshore of Islamorada, captain Dirk Reich on the charter boat Miller Time out of Whale Harbor Marina netted a well full of cigar minnows, and then headed to the 409 Hump, where they chummed blackfin tunas right to the transom of his boat. The 15-pound tunas were eating the live cigar minnows, along with a few dolphins.

MIAMI-DADE/BROWARD

Jay Cohen on the charter boat Spell Bound out of Haulover Marina reported dolphins and an occasional wahoo eight to 12 miles offshore, kingfish in 150 to 200 feet of water, vermilion snappers and amberjacks on the wrecks and Spanish mackerel outside the beaches. KEYS

Captain Bill Hauck on the party boat Sea King out of Marathon reported that crystal-clear waters in depths of 100 feet made snapper fishing tough, but anglers were still catching a mixed bag of yellowtail and mutton snappers, plus a few kingfish. Because of a closed charter Saturday, the Sea King will be closed to the public. . . . During the WFFC Woman's Fly Fishing Tournament held at the Lorelei in Islamorada, Heide Nute of Miami Beach took Grand Champion honors with the catch of one redfish, nine snook and 11 tarpon, all of which were released on fly. Captain Rob Fordyce guided Nute to her catches.

TREASURE COAST

Captain Charlie Conner of FishTales Charters out of Port St. Lucie reported best action has been around baitfish schools that are attracting the attention of gag groupers, redfish, lookdowns, big jacks and snook. Bridges in the area are producing action from black drum and snappers. FLORIDA BAY

Canadian Jim Seip and his son, Matthew, fished two days in Florida Bay and Whitewater Bay and had good success on snook, redfish, lots of jacks and ladyfish, blacktip sharks, tripletail and Spanish mackerel. Their guide was captain Alan Sherman of Get Em Sportfishing Charters.

SOUTHWEST COAST

Captain Roan zumFelde of Rz's Fishing Extremes out of Naples reported lots of action from small snook that are traveling in large numbers along the beaches. Tarpon have been active during early mornings along the passes and creek mouths, redfish have been moving in and out of the back country, pompano and schools of small permit have been along the beaches and passes, and at night, the fly fishing for snook continues to be good. According to zumFelde, this is a good time to target the Everglades Slam by catching a snook, redfish, tarpon and largemouth bass.

FRESHWATER

Wayne Corben out of Belle Glade on Lake Okeechobee reported largemouth bass are eating live wild shiners, Skinny Dippers and Zoom Brush Hog soft plastics in the grassy areas of Buzzard Roosts and in Pelican Bay. Panfish have been feeding in the Tree Island area and Dynamite Holes.
