Indian Creek Regatta draws top club teams

jvarsallone@MiamiHerald.com

The Miami Beach Rowing Club opened the fall season by hosting the 17th annual Head of the Indian Creek Regatta on Sunday at the Ronald W. Shane Center in Miami Beach.

The one-day competition featured about 700 participants, totaling 217 boats, in three divisions -- Championship, Juniors, Masters -- from top clubs throughout Florida.

Highlighted rowers included Allan Bitencourt, a Pan American champion from Brazil; Gabriel Fort, a member of the Miami Beach Rowing Club and the U.S. junior national team; Alex Olesen, a standout from the Belen Jesuit Rowing Team; and Francisco Viacava, a former Olympian for Peru and the coach of the Miami Beach Rowing Club and the U.S. junior national team.

``There are 40 clubs in Florida with junior programs,'' said Viacava, whose team consists of 74 juniors, ``and this event is a good building base for long distance, endurance.''

The youngest on the Miami Beach Rowing Club is 12, and the oldest is 87.

Collier Bowling, Zach Brown, Gabe Henriquez, Sam Kizer, Jake Morse, Sam Ser, Nicole Weinbrum, Dylan Weitzman and Josh Zimmer of the University School Suns Crew Team in Davie found a unique way of preparing. Instead of driving to the regatta, they rowed from Hollywood to Miami Beach.

Then on Sunday, each of more than 40 races covered 2.7 miles. Cape Coral Rowing Club, Miami Beach RC, Miami RC, Sarasota RC, Sarasota Scullers RC and Winter Park RC celebrated multiple winners.
