With the help of three relay teammates, Michael Phelps cemented his place in Olympics history by earning his eighth gold medal in at the Beijing Games.
With a time of 3 minutes 29.34 seconds in the men’s 400-meter medley relay final, the United States won gold in the event for the third consecutive Olympics and Phelps surpassed Mark Spitz for most gold medals in a single Olympic Games.
Phelps, holding a slight lead when he jumped into the pool for the third leg of the relay, extended the United States’ lead over the pack with a 50.15-second split in the butterfly leg of the relay. Jason Lezak closed the race to give the United States the gold.
