Fourth-seeded Serena Williams made quick work of No. 3 seed Maria Sharapova in the women’s tennis singles final, taking a 6-0, 6-1 victory for the gold on the grass courts of the All England Club in Wimbledon.
The win completed a career “Golden Slam” for Williams, who had already won all of tennis’s grand slam events in her career.
Williams won all seven of her matches in the tournament in straight sets and did not drop more than three games in a given set. Victoria Azarenka of Belarus earned bronze in the singles tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Russia’s Maria Kirilenko.
Never miss a local story.
Serena and sister Venus also took home their third women’s doubles gold medal, capping their journey with a 6-4, 6-4 win over the Czech Republic’s Andrea Hlaváčková and Lucie Hradecká. Russia’s Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova took bronze.
