Changing of the guard – but will it be left or right for Miami Dolphins’ Shelley Smith?

Shelley Smith has a new bride, a new zip code and a new jersey number.

Shelley Smith has a new bride, a new zip code and a new jersey number.

But will he have newfound stability at one position?

That still remains to be seen.

Smith, the still-newly signed Miami Dolphins lineman back in town after an Arizona wedding, played left and right guard for the St. Louis Rams a year ago.

The Dolphins have openings at both positions. And they’re (presumably) not done adding.

So when Smith met with reporters Tuesday for the first time since signing with the Dolphins last month, he didn’t have an answer when asked what position he will play this fall.

“I’m going to leave that up to the coaches,” Smith said. “I’ve played a lot on either side of the ball. Wherever they want me to line up, I will.”

For now, Smith simply wants to catch his breath. He signed with the Dolphins on March 14. He married high school friend-turned-sweetheart Lindsey Acer in the Phoenix area the next day. The newlyweds haven’t even had a chance to honeymoon yet.

“It’s kind of a whirlwind,” said Smith, a former sixth-round pick out of Colorado State who has played professionally in Houston and St. Louis.

Things won’t slow down much for a while. In addition to settling into a new city, Smith — who will wear No. 64 after wearing No. 66 with the Rams — will need to quickly bond with a revamped offensive line.

Mike Pouncey is the only starter from 2013 still on roster. Left tackle Branden Albert could be the cornerstone, but he’s also new.

Regardless, there’s optimism that the upcoming season’s group will be much better than the one that allowed a franchise-record 58 sacks a year ago.

“I think it can be a lot more improved,” Smith said. “I think that they brought in some really good players. I think that things are heading in the right direction.”
