The attorney for Mark Duper said Friday that the former Miami Dolphins star receiver did not abuse his 17-year-old son as charged, and that Duper will be exonerated once all the facts come out.
Authorities say Duper, 54, punched, body-slammed and choked a minor, rendering him unconscious. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office declined to identify the victim, but Duper, reached by The Miami Herald Thursday, acknowledged his son Marcus was involved.
However, many of the particulars about the incident did not happen the way law enforcement has said, claims Duper’s Miami-based attorney, George D. Cholakis. Duper was charged with felony child abuse, and later released from jail on $5,000 bond.
Here’s his version of events:
On Tuesday, there was a “situation” involving Mark and Marcus in Duper’s home, Cholakis said. Police arrived soon thereafter — but only because Mark and his wife, Carolyn, called them, and told them in real time what was happening.
“Although the incident did not happen as reported, we will not debate these issues in the media,” Cholakis said. “That debate, if and when necessary, will occur in a court of law.”
Cholakis said Duper did not commit any acts of child abuse, and that he was “devastated” by his son’s accusations.
“We are confident everyone will understand what really happened once the truth is revealed,” Cholakis added.
