Johnson crashes early at Texas

The Sports Network

Points leader Jimmie Johnson spent a little more than one hour and fell 112 laps behind after crashing on the third lap in Sunday's Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.

Johnson, who is attempting to win his unprecedented fourth straight Sprint Cup Series championship, sustained major damage to the front end of his No.48 Chevrolet. David Reutimann made slight contact with Sam Hornish Jr., and Hornish then bumped Johnson, sending him into the inside retaining wall along the backstretch.

Crew members from Johnson's replaced both the front and rear suspension, as well as the drive shaft and water system.

One lap after returning to the track, Johnson had to pit for a tire rub, which put him several more laps behind.

Johnson entered the third-to-last race of the season with a 184-point lead.
