Notes
At the halfway point in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, Jimmie Johnsonhas taken control of the 2009 edition of the NASCAR playoffs. Ninety pointsclear of Mark Martin, Johnson has put the peddle to the metal, winning twostraight and three of the last four Chase races. In fact, in the five races,Johnson has five top-10's. Although Martin is Johnson's nearest competitor,Jeff Gordon has moved into third on the points list, 135 behind. Speed Racerhas recorded four straight top-6 finishes, including a pair of runner-upplacings in California and North Carolina.Johnson has dominated this race in recent seasons, winning three straight andfour of the last five. Last year, Johnson defeated Dale Earnhardt Jr by lessthan a second for his 39th title. It was another overwhelming performance, ashe led seven times for a whopping 339 laps. Starting on the pole, Johnson ledthe final 35 laps to edge Earnhardt Jr by 0.708 of a second. A win this yearwill tie Johnson with the great Richard Petty, who won this race fourconsecutive years from 1967-1970.Johnson's victory total now stands at 46, good for 13th on the all-time SprintCup wins list. His average finish at this track is 5.3.Gordon, one shy of Cale Yarborough on the all-time wins list at 82, hasperformed well in his own right at Martinsville, recording five straighttop-10's including a win in 2005. In addition, Gordon has won at this trackseven times. In 2007, Johnson became the first back-to-back winner of this race sinceDarrell Waltrip captured three straight in 1987-89. Johnson, who startedfourth on the grid, led four times for 147 laps, as he defeated Ryan Newmanunder caution for his 30th career Sprint Cup title. Johnson survived a recordnumber of cautions (21) en route to victory. When Kurt Busch won the 2002 fall race from the 36th starting position, itmarked the furthest back a race winner had started. In 2005, Jeff Gordon reclaimed the lead on lap 360 of the 500-lap event andheld off pole sitter Tony Stewart for his 73rd Sprint Cup Series title.Stewart led seven times for a total of 283 laps, but finished 0.235 of asecond behind Gordon. Before 72,000 fans, Gordon led for 151 laps, as hecaptured one of four races that year.Martinsville Speedway is the last charter race track still on the NASCARSprint Cup Series schedule. There have been many changes to the .526-milefacility since it hosted its first NASCAR premier series event in 1949. Thatfirst race at the dirt-surfaced speedway covered 200 laps with 15 cars in thefield. Today's races at Martinsville cover 500 laps with 43 cars competing. Acrowd of 10,000 attended that first race, while an estimated 64,000 were inattendance at the race last season. Red Byron won the initial race in1949, pocketing $1,500 for the victory. There have been 121 NASCAR Sprint CupSeries races at Martinsville Speedway, one in the inaugural year and two racesper year since 1950. The pole sitter has captured 18 of those races and thetop two positions have taken the checkered flag 33 times. The seventh race in the "Chase for the Sprint Cup" championship takes placeNovember 1st at Talladega Superspeedway. Tony Stewart will attempt to defendhis title in the Amp Energy 500.10/23 14:57:03 ETJoin the discussion
