Notes
The final event of the IndyCar season is upon us, as Scott Dixon seeksto win his second consecutive Series title. With five wins in the book, Dixonholds a slim, five-point lead over teammate Dario Franchitti and a six-pointadvantage over Ryan Briscoe. This logjam, is the second-closest three-manface-off in series history. This is the fourth consecutive year that thechampionship will be decided in the final race. It will also be the 10th timein 14 IndyCar Series seasons that the title will be decided at the final race. With a victory, Dixon can tie the series record for wins in a season with sixand he'll join Sam Hornish Jr as the only three-time series champion. Thebottom line, Dixon must finish ahead of Franchitti and Briscoe regardless ofwhere he finishes the race to clinch the title.Last season, Dixon ended the three-year reign of Dan Wheldon at Homestead-Miami Speedway, as he posted a miniscule victory over Marco Andretti. Dixon, who started on the pole, led for 67 laps, as he clipped Andretti by 0.5828 ofa second. Andretti led for a race-high 85 laps, while Wheldon, who was seekinghis fourth straight win in Miami, placed third. In 2007, Wheldon completed the hat trick in Florida, as he raced to victoryfor the third consecutive season. Wheldon maneuvered his Target No.10 to a6.4993-second victory over teammate Scott Dixon. The win, his 12th careercheckered flag, was a dominant one, as he led 179 of the 200 laps, includingthe final 81. Wheldon's victory total now stands at 15.Dixon, Wheldon and Sam Hornish Jr are the only pole sitters to capture thisrace.Although Wheldon finished third last year, he has posted five consecutivetop-3 finishes. Helio Castroneves has never finished outside the top-10 in hisseven previous starts.Homestead-Miami Speedway opened in 1995 shortly after Hurricane Andrewdevastated the region. The facility is owned and operated by InternationalSpeedway Corp. In addition to Indy Racing, HMS plays host to several events, including the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series and theNASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Homestead-Miami Speedway is in operation260 days of the year. The 2010 IndyCar Series season begins Sunday, March 14 in Brazil.10/09 15:33:01 ETJoin the discussion
