Notes
NASCAR was hoping its first-ever national touring series race run in therain would go the scheduled distance, but it didn't as Canadian Ron Fellowswon the 2008 rain-shortened NAPA Auto Parts 200. Fellows battled wet trackconditions and capitalized on an early race pit strategy to score his fourthcareer Nationwide Series victory. All four of his wins have come on roadcourses. With the win, Fellows, who drove the No.5 Chevrolet for Earnhardt's JRMotorsports in a one-race deal, became the first Canadian-born driver to win aNASCAR national series event in Canada.Kevin Harvick won the inaugural NAPA Auto Parts 200 back in 2007 at theCircuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. Harvick took the checkered flag in wildfashion after Robby Gordon spun out the race leader. The race would come downto the rookie Marcos Ambrose and one of NASCAR's best off- road and roadcourse racers, Gordon. On the restart with four laps to go, Ambrose got agreat jump on Gordon. But Fellows and Pruett didn't make it through turn twoand they spun around blocking the track and forcing a caution flag. Meanwhile,Ambrose had spun Gordon out after the caution flags were displayedNASCAR determined that Gordon should restart in 14th place, but Gordon refusedto move from behind Ambrose. NASCAR should have red-flagged the race at thatpoint to force Gordon to move, but instead began the race with Gordon rightbehind the leader. Gordon, of course, took out his frustration on Ambrosespinning him out in the second corner. Harvick inherited the lead and afterholding off Carpentier was declared the winner.Gordon claimed he won the race, but Harvick was the actual winner as Gordonhad been black-flagged and his final laps weren't counted by the scoringcomputer. NASCAR parked Gordon for the Cup event at the Pocono Raceway thenext day for his actions in Montreal. Pole sitter Patrick Carpentier led threetimes for 14 laps and placed second. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has hosted Formula One, Champ Car and the NASCARCanadian Tires Series. The circuit, on lle Notre-Dame, a man-made island inthe St. Lawrence River that is part of the city of Montreal, was named afterthe late Canadian driver Gilles Villeneuve, father of Jacques Villeneuve. Thevenue hosted the Champ Car World Series and Grand Prix of Montreal from2002-2007. The circuit is a fast circuit, but it is also something like astreet circuit. The roads were designed for automobile racing, but are publicroads for the rest of the year. The Nationwide Series will be at Atlanta Motor Speedway on September 5 for theDegree V12 300. Matt Kenseth is the defending race champion.08/25 18:23:19 ETJoin the discussion
