The Fort Lauderdale Strikers didn’t go far to find their new coach.
The team, under a new ownership group that includes Brazilian great Ronaldo, on Monday announced the hiring of Marcelo Neveleff, an Argentine coach who was technical director of Weston FC, one of the largest youth clubs in South Florida.
Neveleff, 51, has coached in Bolivia with Wilstermann and Aurora, leading the former to an appearance in the 2011 Copa Libertadores. He was also an assistant coach for Miami FC in 2010.
“Marcelo has been in South Florida for the past 25 years, so he knows the soccer landscape and has helped develop some of the elite players in the region,” soccer director Andre Chaves said. “He brings a lot of experience to the position, and we are all very excited to have him here.”
Strikers players Manny Gonzalez and Aly Alberto Hassan were coached by Neveleff during their youth. Neveleff also managed Hassan at Aurora in 2013 when the forward was on loan from the Strikers.
The Strikers open the season at home against the New York Cosmos on April 4 at Lockhart Stadium.
