Of its 2,393 residents, Shepherd, Texas, can now count an 18-year-old multi-millionaire among its inhabitants. Tyler Kolek, who was raised on a cattle ranch in the small town, agreed to terms Saturday with the Marlins on a $6 million bonus.
The Marlins made the right-hander, who routinely registers triple digits with his fastball, the second overall pick in the amateur draft earlier this month. It is the third-largest bonus ever given to a high school pitcher.
The Marlins have now worked out deals with most of their top picks, and they have saved money in the process by carving out agreements for signing bonuses below the slot values assigned to those selections.
Kolek’s bonus is $800,000 below slot for the second overall selection.
They also completed below-slot deals with catcher Blake Anderson, their Competitive Balance A pick (36th overall), and second baseman Brian Anderson, their third-round pick (76th overall).
According to Jim Callis of MLB.com, the Marlins saved roughly $1.365 million in bonus-pool money with three of their first four selections. Second-round choice Justin Twine signed for slot value of $1.316 million.
The Marlins previously traded a competitive-balance pick to Pittsburgh for reliever Bryan Morris. That pick had an assigned value of $1.4 million.
“He was pretty locked up,” manager Mike Redmond said. “It seems like a muscular thing, so hopefully it’s not an extended amount of time, just a couple of days to let it calm down and release.”
Yelich left Friday’s game after he felt discomfort in his back while running out a ground ball.
“I had that a few times,” Redmond said. “For whatever reason, you bend over or make an awkward move and your back just locks up. It takes a few days to loosen up.”Rafael Furcal
“It’s going to take him a little while, like with everybody else when they first come up, to adjust,” Redmond said. “He hadn’t played in a big-league game in a long time. All we can do is roll him out there and let him get adjusted and comfortable.”
After playing all 13 innings Friday and nine more Saturday, Furcal could be given the day off Sunday, Redmond said.
