Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The Texas Rangers have activated catcher Geovany Soto from the 15-day disabled list for their weekend series with the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park.
Soto, who has played in just three games this season due to knee surgery and a strained right groin, will bat seventh and be behind the plate for Friday's matchup with the Astros.
The veteran backstop was activated from the 60-day DL following the All-Star break but was sidelined again in less than a week after injuring his groin while running the bases in a July 21 game against the New York Yankees.
Soto has gone 4-for-11 at the plate in his limited time this year and hit .245 with nine home runs and 22 RBI in 54 games last season.
The Rangers designated pitcher Jerome Williams for assignment to open up a spot on the active roster.
Williams went 1-1 in two starts after joining Texas on July 25, but was tagged for 10 runs and 13 hits over four innings last Friday at Cleveland in his most recent outing.
The journeyman right-hander began the season with Houston but was released by the Astros last month.
