Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - The St. Louis Cardinals have signed catcher A.J. Pierzynski.

The Cardinals expect the 37-year-old veteran to join the team in Chicago on Saturday.

Pierzynski was released by the Boston Red Sox on July 16 after batting .254 with four home runs and 31 RBI over 72 games.

The Cardinals have been searching for a viable replacement since losing Yadier Molina, who had surgery earlier this month to repair a ruptured thumb ligament.

Catcher George Kottaras was designated for assignment to clear a spot for Pierzynski on the active roster.
