Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The Texas Rangers placed pitcher Nick Martinez on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday due to discomfort in the rookie's left side.

Martinez has not pitched since being tagged for eight runs -- six earned -- in five innings in a loss at Baltimore on July 1. The young right-hander has dropped five straight decisions since picking up his first major league win at Detroit on May 24.

In 16 games -- including 11 starts -- this season, Martinez has produced a 1-6 record with a 5.10 earned run average.

Phil Irwin was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock in a related move and will start Tuesday's game against Houston.

The effort will be Irwin's second career start in the big leagues, having earned a 4 2/3-inning no-decision for Pittsburgh on April 13, 2013.

Texas claimed the 27-year-old off waivers from the Pirates on May 28, with Irwin going 4-1 with a 2.41 ERA in seven appearances (six starts) for Round Rock following the move.
