Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Pittsburgh Pirates placed infielder Clint Barmes on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday and recalled infielder Michael Martinez from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Barmes injured his left groin making a throw during batting practice before Saturday's 3-2 win over Philadelphia. He has been diagnosed with a Grade 3 adductor sprain and is expected to be sidelined for 4-to-6 weeks.
The move was made retroactive to June 30.
The 35-year-old utilityman has been used mostly in a reserve role this season, batting .239 with four RBI in 88 plate appearances. He has spent time at all four infield positions.
Martinez, who started at second base against the Marlins on June 13, went 13- for-30 in his last eight minor league games.
