Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jeff Samardzija tossed seven innings in his Oakland debut and the Athletics completed a four-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays with Sunday's 4-2 win.
Samardzija (1-0), who was acquired from the Chicago Cubs on Saturday, gave up a run on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
"I was excited," said Samardzija. "I knew I had a lot of adrenaline going. Surprisingly I slept pretty well last night. I woke up and was just excited."
John Jaso and Craig Gentry both had two hits and an RBI for the Athletics, who swept a four-game set from Toronto for the second time in Oakland history.
Toronto starter Drew Hutchison (6-7) allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings.
The Blue Jays totaled only four runs in the series.
"We got shut down big time here," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said.
Jed Lowrie led off the second with a double and came home on Gentry's two-out single.
The A's hit three consecutive singles to open the fourth, with Nate Freiman plating Stephen Vogt. A two-out base hit by Jaso drove in Lowrie to make it 3-0.
Toronto finally got to Samardzija in the sixth. Jose Reyes hit a one-out single, Munenori Kawasaki followed with a double and Reyes scored on a Melky Cabrera groundout.
Derek Norris made it 4-1 with an RBI double in the eighth.
Sean Doolittle earned his 13th save of the season despite allowing a pinch-hit homer to Steve Tolleson in the ninth.
