Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Gerrit Cole will return to the Pittsburgh Pirates' rotation after a 3 1/2-week absence when the club continues its series with the New York Mets on Saturday.
The Pirates activated Cole, who hasn't pitched since June 3 due to a fatigued shoulder, from the 15-day disabled list prior to Saturday's matchup.
Prior to being temporarily shut down, the 2011 No. 1 overall pick had posted a 6-3 record with a 3.64 earned run average through 12 starts. Cole had pitched into the seventh inning in just one of his last five outings, however.
Brandon Cumpton was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis to make room for Cole on the active roster, one day after the right-hander held the Mets to two runs in a seven-inning no-decision on Friday.
Cumpton has made nine starts overall for the Pirates this season, going 3-2 with a 4.61 ERA.
