Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - The Kansas City Royals activated pitcher Bruce Chen from the 60-day disabled list on Tuesday.

Chen, 37, was dealing with a bulging disc in his lower back. He hasn't pitched since April 24 and is expected to move into the bullpen.

In four starts for the Royals this season, the lefty is 1-2 with a 7.45 earned run average.

To make room on the roster, Kansas City optioned pitcher Tim Collins to Triple-A Omaha.

Collins is 0-3 with a 4.15 ERA across 17 1/3 innings of work this season.

The club also designated pitcher Donnie Joseph for assignment.
