Tigers' J.D. Martinez named AL Player of the Week

New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Detroit Tigers outfielder J.D. Martinez was named the American League Player of the Week on Monday for the first time in his career.

Martinez, who spent his first three major league seasons with the Astros, hit 12-for-27 with four home runs and 11 RBI to capture the first weekly honor for Detroit this season. He ranked first in the majors in RBI and slugging percentage (1.000) and tied for first in home runs and total bases (27).

The Tigers won four straight games to finish the week after dropping three straight to the Royals. Martinez had at least one hit in all seven games and is currently on a career-long 12-game hitting streak.

Other noteworthy performers last week included Houston's Jose Altuve and Toronto's Edwin Encarnacion.
