Mixed martial arts has been dominating the headlines as of late. Just last week the Antonio "Minotauro" Nogueira-Randy Couture UFC bout was the top story for several major sports web sites.
The sport keeps growing in popularity and Friday night, Miami gets a taste of the MMA phenomenon as Shine Fights Promotions presents American Top Team vs. The World; an eight-fight card at the James L. Knight Center featuring American Top Team fighters squaring off against other top fighters.
The main event features ATT's Roan "Jucao" Carneiro (12-8) taking on Jorge Patino in a welterweight bout. Carneiro's last five fights have all taken place in the UFC, but he lost three of those fights, the last to Ryo Chonan by split decision. Carneiro looks to get back in the win column against fellow Brazilian Jorge Patino (22-11-1) in what proves to be a crossroads fight.
Also on the card is former UFC lightweight contender Yves Edwards (34-15-1) who takes on James Warfield (15-3). Edwards, a native of the Bahamas, is looking to get back into the MMA limelight. A veteran of the UFC, Pride, Strikeforce and Elite XC, Edwards believes his experience will be the difference in his battle versus Wisconsin's Warfield who has 18 fights under his belt, but hasn't faced anyone with the credentials Edwards possesses.
Former Green Bay Packers running back and Homestead native Herbert "Whisper" Goodman faces James Brasco in a middleweight bout, and former University of Miami football player Brian Fuery makes his MMA debut as he takes on Phil Friedman.
The first bout begins at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door, or through Ticketmaster.
