Oceanport, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Blue Violet, ridden by Jose Caraballo, rallied down the stretch Monday to capture Monmouth Park's $75,000 Lady's Secret Stakes going 1 1/16 miles.
My Miss Sophia, second in the Kentucky Oaks, was the 3-10 favorite in the six- horse field of fillies and mares. Blue Violet was the 6-1 third pick behind 9-2 second choice Rebecca's Surprise.
Blue Violet, a daughter of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, was racing off the pace being set by Rebecca's Surprise and veteran Monmouth rider C. C. Lopez. My Miss Sophia was right with Rebecca's Surprise on the lead.
My Miss Sophia, with jockey Eddie Castro, took the lead leaving the final turn but was unable to hold off her competition. Rebecca's Surprise retook the lead down the stretch as Blue Violet came running along the rail.
Blue Violet hit the wire a half-length ahead of Oasis At Midnight who rallied from last as a 51-1 longshot. Rebecca's Surprise got third followed by Lucky Rag Doll, My Miss Sophia and Mine Own. Brenda's Way and Liberated were scratched.
"The plan was to sit right in behind the speed and that's what we did," said Caraballo. "I knew there were a couple good speed horses in there so I just sat behind them. She was so comfortable - really into the bit and just cruising. In the stretch, the inside opened and when they did that they gave me the race."
The time for the Lady's Secret on a fast track was 1:44.54.
Trained by Larry Jones for Susan Knoll, Blue Violet earned $45,000 for the win. The 4-year-old chestnut filly has banked $171,576 with four wins and three seconds in 16 career starts.
Blue Violet returned $14.60, $6.40 and $14.40. Oasis At Midnight paid $18.40 and $47.20, and Rebecca's Surprise paid $10.20 to show. In the show pool, $29,675 of the total $35,629 was wagered on My Miss Sophia.
