Arlington Heights, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Magician, winner of last year's Breeders' Cup Turf, has been given the nod as the morning line favorite for Saturday's 32nd Arlington Million over defending winner Real Solution.
Trained by Aidan O'Brien and ridden by his son Joseph, Magician is the 7-5 program favorite over 5-2 second choice Real Solution for the 1 1/4-mile turf event at Arlinton Park which drew a field of seven. A win in the Million will send the victor to this year's Turf at Santa Anita.
Owned by Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and Mrs. John Magnier. Magician has drawn post 3 for his first start in the United States since last year's half- length triumph in the Turf at Santa Anita.
"Perfect. Everything has gone well for Magician," said O'Brien assistant Pat Keating. "He shipped in well and has done what we've asked him to do. We're very happy with him this morning. All we need is a bit of luck tomorrow with all of them. He seems to be the same as last year when he shipped (to America)."
The four-year-old colt is coming off consecutive runner-up finishes in the Tattersalls Gold Cup in May and the Prince of Wales's Stakes in June. Magician has won five of 12 lifetime starts for $2,357,992.
Real Solution, trained by Chad Brown, will break from post 6 with Javier Castellano riding. Last year, Alan Garcia guided the horse when he was awarded the victory over The Apache after the winner was disqualified.
"He seems the same as last year and is feeling really good," said Osvaldo Hernandez, assistant trainer to Brown.
Owned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey, Real Solution is coming off his first win of the year in the Manhattan at Belmont Park on June 7. The Million was the horse's lone victory of 2013. He was ninth behind Magician in the Breeders' Cup Turf.
The 5-year-old has banked $1,358,175 with five wins in 13 career starts.
Here is the field for the Million in post position order: Hardest Core, Eriluis Vaz, 20-1; Smoking Sun, Stephane Pasquier, 9-2; Magician, Joseph O'Brien, 7-5; Finnegans Wake, Ryan Moore, 12-1; Up With the Birds, Eurico Rosa da Silva, 6-1; Real Solution, Javier Castellano, 5-2 and Side Glance, Jamie Spencer, 8-1.
Post time for Arlington Million XXXII will be approximately 6:36 p.m. ET.
