Imperative goes for rebound effort in Pacific Classic

Trainer George Papaprodromou will saddle Imperative next Sunday at Del Mar Racetrack for the 1 1/4-mile, $1 million Pacific Classic in the hope the 4-year-old can return to the winner's circle.

Del Mar, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Trainer George Papaprodromou will saddle Imperative next Sunday at Del Mar Racetrack for the 1 1/4-mile, $1 million Pacific Classic in the hope the 4-year-old can return to the winner's circle.

Imperative, owned by KM Racing Enterprises Inc., reached the heights of racing back in April when he caught and passed defending winner Game On Dude in the $1.5 million Charles Town Classic. However, the 4-year-old has regressed in his last two starts, including Del Mar's San Diego Handicap.

Imperative, who is ridden by Kent Desormeaux, came up third in the Gold Cup at Santa Anita in early July and later in the month eighth in the San Diego.

Sent off as a 26-1 longshot in the Charles Town Classic, Imperative will probably again be an outsider in the 24th Pacific Classic.

The 4-year-old has banked $1,194,870 with three wins in 17 career starts. He was second to Blingo in the San Antonio Stakes early this year but seventh to Game On Dude in the Santa Anita Handicap.

Other probable starters in the Pacific Classic are defending winner Game On Dude, Gold Cup winner Majestic Harbor, Eclipse Award winner Shared Belief, Clubhouse Ride, San Diego winner Fed Biz, Irish Surf, Footbridge, You Know I Know, Footbridge, Big Casanova, Sky Kingdom, Mystery Train and Toast of New York.
