Toronto, ON ( - Canada's reigning Horse of the Year Up With the Birds, breaking from the outside post, came from off the pace to capture Saturday's $200,000 Nijinsky Stakes on the turf at Woodbine.

Owned by Sam-Son Farm and trained by Malcolm Pierce, Up With the Birds broke from the far outside post in the seven-horse field with Eurico Rosa Da Silva riding. The 4-year-old was the 7-2 third pick behind 3-2 favorite Za Approval and 2-1 second choice Five Iron.

Up With the Birds was last in the 1 1/8-mile stakes. The colt moved wide around the final turn and drove down the middle of the grass course. He drew away from the field and posted a four-length victory over 24-1 longshot Dynamic Sky.

"He's had a couple of really good works coming into this race," said Pierce. "He's in good order and when you have a good horse right, they're dangerous."

Finishing third was River Seven followed by Dorsett, Za Approval, Five Iron and Really Sharp.

The time for the Nijinsky was 1:45.74 on a firm turf course.

Up With the Birds registered his first win of the year in three starts. It was worth $144,000 to bring the colt's lifetime earnings to $1,296,259 with seven wins in 12 starts.

The 4-year-old began 2014 with consecutive sixth-place finishes in an allowance race at Keeneland and the Dixie Handicap at Pimlico on Preakness Day.

Last year, Up With the Birds won the Breeders' Stakes at Woodbine along with victories in the Jamaica, Marine and Black Gold Stakes.

Up With the Birds returned $9.00, $3.90 and $4.10. Dynamic Sky paid $10.90 and $4.90, and River Seven paid $4.00 to show.
