The Atlanta Thrashers will try to match their longest winning streak of the season tonight, when they host the struggling Florida Panthers in a Southeast Division matchup at Philips Arena.
The Thrashers have won three in a row and can tie the four-game winning streak they posted from November 8-15 with another victory tonight. Atlanta, which is second in the Southeast with 29 points, has recorded a 9-3-2 record over its last 14 games.
Atlanta is coming off Saturday's home win over Philadelphia, a victory that ended a 14-game losing streak against the Flyers. Johan Hedberg stopped 34 shots to record his first shutout of the season and lead the Thrashers to the 1-0 decision.
"That was a team effort. Every time a goalie has a good game, it was mostly because the team in front of him was playing well," said Hedberg. "We spent a lot of time in the penalty box but still managed to keep them off the scoreboard."
Rich Peverley provided the lone goal for the Thrashers, who hadn't beaten Philly since a 6-5 overtime decision on November 18, 2005. Atlanta also posted its first home win over the Flyers since December 21, 2003.
Atlanta killed off all four Philadelphia power plays to make Peverley's goal stand as the game-winner.
The Thrashers ended a three-game home losing streak with Saturday's victory and are just 5-5-2 as the host this year. Atlanta will complete a three-game homestand Thursday against the New York Islanders.
Florida lost its fourth straight game on Saturday, when it was dealt a 4-1 setback in Nashville. Dan Hamhuis tallied a goal and an assist as the Predators scored three times in the third period to skate away with the win at Sommet Center.
Jordan Leopold scored the lone goal for the Panthers, while Scott Clemmensen allowed three goals on 28 shots in defeat.
"It's our second opportunity in two nights to win a game in the third period, and we didn't do it," Leopold said. "It's frustrating to say the least, but we're playing every other day right now and we got to move forward."
Florida also allowed three goals in the third period of Friday's 6-4 home loss to Toronto. The Panthers are in the midst of their third four-game skid of the season, but they haven't lost five straight since a six-game losing streak from October 25-November 8 of last season.
The Panthers are 7-5-1 as the guest this year, but had won four straight on the road prior to the setback in Nashville.
Florida forward Gregory Campbell missed his fifth straight game with an upper- body injury on Saturday, but could be back in the lineup tonight.
Tonight's tilt marks the first of six scheduled meetings between Florida and the Thrashers this season. The Panthers won four of six encounters in 2008-09 and have won nine out of 12 overall in the series. Florida has also taken five of the last six meetings in Atlanta.
