Blue Jackets finalize season-opening roster

The Sports Network

The Columbus Blue Jackets trimmed their season-opening roster to 23 players on Tuesday with several moves.

The most notable move was left wing Fredrik Modin being placed on injured reserve with a sprained MCL in his right knee. He's expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks.

Modin had nine goals and 16 assists in 50 games for Columbus last season, his third with the club. The 12-year NHL veteran has registered 220 goals and 221 assists in 814 career games with the Blue Jackets, Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs.

With the acquisition of defenseman Anton Stralman from Calgary on Monday, fellow blueliner Martin Skoula was released, and subsequently signed with Pittsburgh.

Left wing Alexandre Picard and defenseman Mathieu Roy were placed on waivers for the purpose of assigning them to Columbus' American Hockey League affiliate in Syracuse.

The Blue Jackets also signed defensemen David Liffiton and Dylan Reese to two- way contracts and assigned them to Syracuse. Left wing Matt Calvert was returned to Brandon Wheat of the Western Hockey League.

Columbus opens its season on Saturday at home against the Minnesota Wild.
