Host Cardinal Gibbons qualified six wrestlers for state, the most of any Broward team, at the Region 4-1A championships on Saturday in Fort Lauderdale. The Chiefs were third out of 30 teams -- also a Broward best.
Gibbons celebrated four region championships with senior Domingo Simmons (36-0) winning at 119 lbs., senior Paul Marcello (35-1) at 125, junior C.J. Burke (36-2) at 135 and senior Frank Pettineo (36-0) at 145.
Pettineo, the 2008 state runner-up, won his second consecutive region title. Simmons, who was third at state a year ago, is now also a two-time region champ. Marcello, third at region last season, makes his third trip to state. A swimmer, Burke, who won region as a freshman at 119, did not compete last season.
The Chiefs finished behind Jensen Beach and Miami Pace at region, but with six strong showings, coach Frank Pettineo Sr. feels confident in his team's chances at state.
In an anticipated rematch from the district finals at 215, first-year wrestler T.J. Marshall (29-3), a sophomore at Archbishop McCarthy, got revenge by pinning Pace senior standout John Sennett (32-3), the defending region champ, in 2:23.
''When he tried to throw me, I just took him down and held him there,'' said Marshall, who lost to Sennett 3-2 in last week's district final. ``If I meet him again at state, I just have to focus and try to dominate again. I want to be the state champ.''
McCarthy, which sends five to state, finished fourth in the team standings. Mavericks senior Parker Larson (24-8) was runner-up at 152, and junior Tyler Duncan (37-4) was third at 140. Junior teammate Chad Lomax (29-11) also qualified for state by placing third at 112, beating Doral's Jason Alfau (30-8). Alfau became the first seventh-grader in Miami-Dade County history to reach state, according to organizers.
