ROUNDUP

South Florida coaches will lead all-star game

flyon@MiamiHerald.com

Three South Florida high school coaching icons with 14 state titles between them will grace the sidelines at the McDonald's All-American High School basketball game on April 1.

Darryl Burrows, who has guided powerhouse Fort Lauderdale Dillard to five state titles since 2000 and Miami Monsignor Pace's Mark Lieberman, who has led the Spartans to four state titles, will guide the Boys East team.

South Broward boys coach Abby Ward, who led the South Broward girls team to five of its six state titles, will guide the Girls East team when the 2009 McDonald's All-American game makes its Florida debut at the BankUnited Center on the University of Miami's Coral Gables campus.

''This is a great honor,'' Burrows said. ``You think you have accomplished a lot by winning titles and winning a lot of games, but this is the ultimate when it comes to All-Star games. When you hear some stuff like being selected coach in such a great game, you have to try and keep your composure. That Miami got the game is well deserved. It will spotlight South Florida basketball quite a bit.''

The boys game will be broadcast live on ESPN starting at 8 p.m. and will be preceded by the Girls Game on ESPNU at 5:30 p.m. In last year's boys game, the East defeated the West 107-102 behind MVP Tyreke Evans.

Burrows said that he and Lieberman have already discussed which players might be selected and how they will handle minutes and substitution patterns. The roster wont' be announced until Feb. 19 on ESPNU but anticipation is already building that one of those players will be homegrown star Kenny Boynton Jr., a high-scoring 6-3 guard for Plantation American Heritage.

''It is going to be rough trying to give all those guys equal minutes,'' Burrows said. ``Mark and I talked [Thursday]. We've already started kind of working on some type of strategy even though the game is still three months away.''

There is a distinct possibility Broward County could land a Florida-record three players on the All-American team. Besides Boynton, who some consider a lock, Broward could also be represented by nationally-ranked guards Erica Wheeler from reigning 3A state champion Parkway Academy and American Heritage's Bianca Lutley. Ranked No. 39 in the 2009 class by ESPNU HoopGurlz 100, Wheeler, a two-time Miami Herald Class 1A-3A Broward Player of the Year has signed with Rutgers while Lutley -- ranked No. 24 by HoopGurlz -- is headed to LSU.
