Krop boys edge Norland in basketball
BY RUDY RODRIGUEZ-CHOMAT
Miami Herald Writer
Krop's Joe Thomas made a free throw with 1.1 seconds to play as the Lightning edged district rival Norland 41-40 Thursday night at Krop.
Krop led by as much as 10 points late in the third quarter before squandering the lead when Norland freshman Cleon Roberts hit a three-pointer from the corner to tie it at 40 with 2:26 left.
With 8.5 seconds left, Angel Rodriguez drove to the basket and missed a wild layup attempt, but Thomas grabbed the rebound and was fouled.
Thomas calmly stepped to the line and hit the first free throw. He missed the second, and Norland grabbed the rebound, but the Vikings were unable to get a shot off following a timeout.
Rodriguez led the Lightning with 19 points, but it was the lost opportunities by Norland that was the difference as the game wore down.
Krop gave the Vikings chance after chance, but they simply couldn't take advantage. The Vikings cut the lead to 30-29 late in the third, then missed two layups before Eddie Ramos scored, giving the Lightning a 32-29 leading going into the fourth.
The Vikings had a chance to tie it at 34, but Marvin Baynham, who was plagued with foul trouble and sat for 18 minutes after being whistled for two quick fouls in the first 90 seconds of the game, missed a free throw.
Jackson missed a free throw that would have tied it at 38, and Roberts missed a layup that would have given the Vikings the lead before he finally tied the score at 40, but the Vikings never grabbed the lead.
