The stakes in the marquee guard matchup between American Heritage's Kenny Boynton Jr. and North Carolina Raleigh Word of God's John Wall at the City of Palms Classic just got higher.
The 6-3 Boynton is ranked No. 7 in the 2009 class by Rivals.com, and the 6-4 Wall is ranked No. 1. Both were named to the Naismith Trophy Boys High School Player of the Year watch list on Tuesday. The guard who dominates statistically and leads his team to victory Thursday in Fort Myers could garner votes from the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors.
''John Wall is the No. 1 ranked player in the country,'' Boynton said. ``I feel like I should be the No. 1 player. I am going in to win the matchup and get the win.''
The guards faced each other twice in AAU last summer with Boynton leading his team to the Las Vegas Big time Tournament title.
Boynton was among 10 finalists, joining among others DeMarcus Cousins (No. 2), Xavier Henry (No. 3) and Lance Stephenson (No. 9).
Boynton, a Florida signee who has led the state in scoring the past two seasons, is looking to become the first Florida player to earn the award since its inception in 1987.
''This is another accomplishment,'' Boynton said. ``It goes to show all the hard work has paid off. Hopefully, I can win it.''
The Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors will whittle the list to five candidates in February and select the winner at the end of the high school season.
