• Miramar football team: Five-star quarterback Eugene Smith has bailed out the Miramar defense all season with one heart-stopping comeback after another. In a 6A regional final Friday night against Deerfield Beach, reserve defensive back Joshua Nelson returned the favor. Nelson's leaping interception -- his first of the season -- with 30 seconds left sealed a 34-30 victory. Smith finished with 353 yards passing and four touchdowns, including the 33-yard game-winner to Ivan McCartney with 3:57 left.

TOP PERFORMERS

• Denard Robinson, Deerfield Beach, football: Robinson threw for 235 yards and three touchdowns as the Bucks lost to Miramar.

• Ronnie Kennedy, St. Thomas Aquinas, football: Kennedy accounted for 18 points by scoring on a three-yard run, a 30-yard interception return and 92-yard punt return in 56-14 win over South Fork in the Region 4-5A final.

• James White, St. Thomas Aquinas, football: White had two rushing touchdowns in victory over South Fork.

• Okaro Akumune, Everglades, basketball: The junior forward had a team-high 13 points in victory over cross-town rival Miramar.

• Ed Waite, Pine Crest, basketball: The Monmouth signee had 14 points and 20 rebounds in win over Choice Academy.

• Martavious Irving, Boyd Anderson, basketball: Irving had a game-high 18 points, 10 rebounds and three steals in victory over Blanche Ely.

• Brandon Knight, Pine Crest, basketball: The 6-4 combo guard had a season-high 43 points in victory over Choice Academy.

• James Williams, Deerfield Beach, basketball: The 6-5 forward had a game-high 29 points in win against previously undefeated Douglas.

• Dawnn Maye, Dillard, basketball: Maye scored six of her team-high 14 points in overtime to lead the Panthers over reigning 6A state champions South Broward.

• Angel Desiderio, McArthur, basketball: Desiderio had a team-high 22 points and 10 rebounds in victory over previously unbeaten Cypress Bay.

• Alicia DeVaughn, South Broward, basketball: In a loss to Dillard, the 6-5 center had a game-high 17 points, 25 rebounds, nine blocks and hit a pair of free throws to send the game into overtime.

• Lisa Rennison, University, soccer: Rennison provided the lone score as the Suns (7-2-1) beat Miami LaSalle 1-0.

• Brooke Freeman, Western, soccer: Freeman scored the game-winner as the Wildcats (7-3) beat South Plantation 2-1.

• Monique Maximilien, North Broward, basketball: The freshman center had 12 points and 13 rebounds in win over Pine Crest.
