Roberts powers Norland past Miami High

The faces might be different, but the results remain the same at Norland.
The defending Class 6A state champion and top-ranked team in Miami-Dade blasted Miami High 67-39 on Saturday night at Norland.
Norland sophomore shooting guard Alton Roberts scored seven points in the first quarter. The Vikings, ranked No. 3 in the Class 6A state poll, jumped out to a 19-13 lead at the end of the first and rolled the rest of the way in a game that was never close once they pushed the lead to 30-20 after a three-pointer by Roberts.
By halftime, Roberts had hit three three-pointers and scored 13 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists, as the Vikings built a commanding 41-23 lead going into the break. Roberts finished with 19 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. He hit five of his six three-point attempts with a stroke from the perimeter not seen at Norland since coach Lawton Williams III took over six years ago.
Unlike past Norland teams that won two of the past three Class 6A state championships with seniors running the team, this season Williams has a young but extremely athletic and talented bunch.
Roberts, a 6-1 shooting guard, is one of his young stallions alongside his cousin, 6-4 freshman shooting guard Cleon Roberts. Cleon is the son of assistant coach Cleveland Roberts. On the inside is 6-7 junior Marvin Baynham, who brings reminders of former Viking star Zachary Peacock. Baynham is raw but incredibly improved after playing sparingly during the Vikings' state championship run.
''We've got to keep working,'' Williams said. ``They've got talent. It's a long way to go though.''
Williams is full of praise for Baynham though, who has a work ethic similar to Peacock's.
''He's improved a lot because he's worked so hard. He's not that well-known, but he's one of the better bigs in the county,'' Williams said.
The Vikings are still led by a senior in point guard Tony Mincy, who has grown about three inches and is now 6-foot and has a much-improved jump shot. He finished with 12 points, two rebounds and an assist.
Miami High was led by Julian Vasquez, who scored 17 of the Stings' 23 first-half points. But Miami High coach Marcus Carreno was clearly disgusted with his squad's effort in the first half and put his second and third units in the game.
