ROUNDUP

Pace coach achieves milestone - 300 victories

Miami Herald Writer

A packed résumé of career accomplishments got a little more crowded for Monsignor Pace head basketball coach Mark Lieberman on Wednesday night.

Pace, the two-time defending state champion which is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A, cruised past visiting Belen Jesuit 77-51, giving Lieberman his 300th career victory.

Lieberman, in his 12th season as Pace's coach, moved his career record to 300-71 (.810 winning percentage). He has averaged 27 victories a season at Pace.

Along the way have come four state championships -- in 1999, 2003 and the past two years. The last time the Spartans failed to make the state final four was 2002.

Lieberman was presented with a special plaque by athletic director Joe Zaccheo following the game commemorating the 300-victory milestone.

''It's nice but it's very humbling at the same time,'' said Lieberman. ``I've never really felt it was all about me. It's always been about us at this school. It's the support of the faculty and administration and the hard work of my assistant coaches and players. This has never been a one-man operation around here and it never will be.

``Three-hundred is nice and some day I'll sit on a porch, sip lemonade and enjoy what was accomplished, but my focus is always looking forward and what we need to do to get better, and that's not going to change.''

Pace was led Wednesday night by Rakeem Buckles, who poured in a game-high 30 points with 16 rebounds and six steals.

Buckles also had two assists for good measure as Pace blew out to a 45-29 halftime lead.

Pace eventually extended its lead to as much as 32 before emptying the bench in the fourth quarter.

Darren Stewart (16), Chris Martinez (12) and Damian Parms (10) were the other double-digit scorers for Pace. Pablo Alvarez led the way for Belen with 13 points.
