Football districts face big changes

a1fernandez@MiamiHerald.com

The Florida High School Athletic Association approved a realignment plan Monday for all its sports that will bring major changes to its football districts for the next two years.

The reclassification plan will maintain the current eight-class structure, but in Classes 6A-3A, districts will be reduced from 16 to eight for the 2009 and 2010 seasons, with the top four teams from each advancing to the regional playoffs.

''The plan the board adopted was an excellent compromise,'' said FHSAA Executive Director John A. Stewart in a written statement. ``It will accomplish many goals, including reducing travel, increasing the number of teams in districts and helping to advance the best teams to the playoffs.''

The classes will be divided according to student population, but in classes 6A to 3A, about 72 schools per class will be included, with about 50 schools per class for Classes 2A to 1B.

The current amount of schools per large school classification is 83 schools in Class 6A, 81 in Class 5A, 81 in Class 4A and 83 in Class 3A. The small-school classifications have 40 schools in Class 2A, 37 in Class 2B, 42 in Class 1A and 39 in Class 1B. There also are 48 schools that played under independent status this past season.

The FHSAA also released the dividing lines for each class for the next two seasons. The breakdown is 2,482 students or more for Class 6A; 2,100-2,481 for 5A; 1,801-2,099 for 4A; 1,404-1,800 for 3A; 961-1,403 for 2A; 547-960 for 2B; 289-546 for 1A; and 288 or less for 1B.

The FHSAA will not announce in what districts each school will end up until mid-December.
