FOOTBALL
Friday -- Gulliver Prep 40, North Broward prep 35: Gulliver Prep raided the home of the Eagles and left with the victory.
It was the first playoff victory on the road in Gulliver Prep history.
''Ya'll did it,'' Gulliver coach Earl Sims told his players in the huddle after the game. ``Way to hang in there.''
Three rushing touchdowns and three passing touchdowns won it for Gulliver, despite losing two players to injuries in the fourth quarter. Artice Kellam injured his neck, and Tacoi Sumler injured his back. Both players were taken to North Broward Medical Center. The initial was prognosis was good, according to Sims.
North Broward Prep took the lead in the fourth quarter after Anthony Guerra intercepted a pass by Michael Strauss. The Eagles got the ball on the Raider's 16-yard line and drove down the field, ending with a 7-yard touchdown run by Daniel Papponetti that put the Eagles up 35-34 with 5:25 left to play.
But Gulliver came back when Michael Strauss found Conner Vernon for a 55-yard touchdown pass.
Darian Mallary rushed for 132 yards and scored three touchdowns for Gulliver.
''He's a tough guy. He's got over 1,100 yards rushing,'' Sims said.
Strauss passed for 256 yards and three touchdowns. Daniel Rodriquez caught the other two TD passes, a 12-yarder and a 28-yarder.
North Broward quarterback Brandon Doughty rushed for two touchdowns and passed for one, a 27-yard reception by Nick Alfano. Doughty threw for 239 yards and completed 20 of 31 passes.
''We got the short end of the stick. It's been a heck of game,'' Doughty said. ``We bounced back pretty good in the second half. We hadn't been down at the end yet this year.''
The work continues for Gulliver Prep next week at Archbishop Carroll, which beat American Heritage in their playoff game Friday night.
''We've got to bandage ourselves up and not lick our wounds too much,'' Sims said. ``It's a blessing to be here.''
