Lourdes' cross-country team made two promises to its new coach, Rebecca Rodriguez-Michalak, before the season.
One was to keep winning while she was away on maternity leave. The other was to end the school's three-year state championship drought.
The Bobcats kept the first one, and with their coach back on the course Wednesday afternoon at Larry and Penny Thompson Park, won the District 8-4A championship in convincing fashion.
Lourdes finished with the top three runners, Alessandra Valdes (19:16.34), Cristina Brea (19:20.28) and Victoria Villarnovo (19:36.48) in that order, to win its eighth consecutive district crown. Rodriguez-Michalak, who was there watching with her baby girl, said she thinks the Bobcats are on track to keeping the second promise at state in two weeks.
''I think we're right where we want to be at this time of year,'' said Rodriguez-Michalak, a member of Lourdes' 1999 state championship team. ``Two of the girls ran their fastest times of the season in this race, and they've been progressing over the past few weeks. I think we'll peak at the right time.''
If what Belen did Wednesday on the boys' side is any indication of things to come, it may cruise to its third consecutive Class 2A state title.
The Wolverines took the top six spots in this order -- Larry Duran (16:56.03), Branden Martinez (16:56.37), Lazaro Fields (16:56.74), Elliot Clemente (16:57.09), Gabriel Loret de Mola (16:57.46) and Joseph Dorfman (16:57.86). The Belen ''six-pack'' ran within feet of each other for the final half-mile.
The gap was more narrow in the boys' District 8-4A race as Columbus edged rival Ferguson by seven points to win the team championship. The Explorers were once again led by individual champion Armando Del Valle, who ran a time of 15:59.60 to finish over a half-minute ahead of Braddock's Jesteffer Annichiarico.
Ransom Everglades secured the girls' District 8-2A competition by placing six runners in the top 15, led by third-place Isa Cuervo (20:04.65) to finish with 40 points. Gulliver's Carrie Davis was Dade's best finisher in the race, placing second with a time of 19:29.03. Tavernier Coral Shores freshman Joanna McCoy won the individual title in 19:15.72.
