Robinson powers Deerfield Beach win

Deerfield Beach's fast and furious offense was too hard for host Douglas to handle during Saturday night's 59-18 win. The District 9-6A victory raised the Bucs' record to 5-0 (1-0) and sets up a showdown with undefeated St. Thomas Aquinas next Friday night at St. Thomas.

One player who had a big night for the Bucs was quarterback Denard Robinson, who was 10 for 22 with 322 yards and five touchdowns.

''The offensive line really stepped up,'' Robinson said. ``The running backs also did a great job of finding the holes.''

Both teams scored within the first five minutes of the game. Douglas struck first after Michael Lippman fielded a 10-yard punt and returned it 20 yards to the Deerfield 25. Four plays later, Malik Sparks found a hole on the right side and ran 23 yards for the score. A fumbled center snap cost Douglas the extra point.

On the ensuing kickoff, Donte Dotson zig-zagged his way 96 yards to the Douglas 1-yard line to set up Cassius McDowell's 1-yard score.

• Fort Lauderdale 7, Nova 0: Adriane Gustave scored on a 6-yard run in the second quarter as the host Flying Ls won their first game of the season in a District 16-4A battle on Saturday night at Lockhart Stadium.

The Flying Ls defense stopped Nova six times in Fort Lauderdale territory -- four times on downs, once on a fumble and another on a bad snap off a punt which gave the Flying Ls the ball on the Nova 7-yard line, setting up the winning score.

Titans senior back Marcus Lewis was 16 of 32 passing for 124 yards. Arione Scott caught six passes for 54 yards. Nova's defense allowed 58 yards rushing and 22 yards passing. Fort Lauderdale is 1-4 overall, 1-1 district. Nova is also 1-4, 1-1 district.

• Coconut Creek 10, Blanche Ely 7: It was a battle of the defenses Saturday night in Pompano Beach.

The first half had 10 changes of possession and eight first downs. The Cougars had three fumbles, and Ely recovered two of them. The Tigers fumbled and lost the ball once and were penalized for 75 yards. Each team's quarterback completed only one pass in the half. Eric Wallace was 1 for 7 for 3 yards and Willie Tindal was 1 for 5 for 12 yards.

The second half didn't start well for either team. It began with a Cougar penalty, then a Cougar fumble and soon after, a Tiger penalty.

That penalty gave Coconut Creek a first down. A 6-yard run by Marquise White and another Ely penalty led to another first down. Justin Williams ran 6 and 4 yards for the next Cougar first down.

On the next play, Wallace ran the ball 2 yards into a group of Tigers and was taken down at the 21-yard line. Ely defensive back Anthony Wiggins was hurt in the play and had to be taken to a hospital. According to Ely coach Lawal McCray, Wiggins was taken for precautionary reasons and should be alright.

''He was alert and moving around,'' McCray said.

After a 15-minute delay, the game started again with an Ely penalty. The Cougars weren't able to get any closer to the end zone, though, and the possession ended with Rafel Walisiewiez kicking a 33-yard field goal.

When the Tigers got the ball back, they moved it 65 yards down field, culminating in a 21-yard touchdown pass from Michael German to Bryan Thomas. The Cougars answered with a 21-yard touchdown pass of their own thrown by Eric Wallace to Justin Williams.

''J is great,'' Coconut Creek coach Allen Jackson said of Williams. ``When he gets it in his head to run the football, he's one of the best in Broward County. I'm very proud of him.''
