BCCA SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

It's a sweep for St. Thomas Aquinas

Miami Herald Writer

St. Thomas Aquinas outperformed 10 schools and earned first place in both the girls' (475.50 points) and boys'(331) in Saturday's Broward County Athletics Association (BCAA) Swimming and Diving Championships at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex.

Cardinal Gibbons (313) finished second, beating Stoneman Douglas (295.50) by 17.5 points in the girl's division. In the boys' division, Stoneman Douglas (310.5) earned second over Cardinal Gibbons (306).

Sophomore Damaris Iriondo won the 200-yard freestyle for Saint Thomas Aquinas and helped teammates Kristin Plitnick, Juana Vargas, Lucie Cardet win a close race in the 200 freestyle relay over Coral Gibbins.

Senior Elizabeth Tatum won the diving, leading a St. Thomas Aquinas sweep. Her teammates placed in second, third, and fourth.

Stoneman Douglas won the women's division BCAA Swimming and Diving Championships last year, but with considerable depth, St. Thomas Aquinas captured this year's title.

''Overall as team I am very pleased,'' said St. Thomas Aquinas girls' head coach Jimmy Parmenter. ``We have a young team this year, and the depth of our younger players is better [than last year].''

Stoneman Douglas' Lindsey McKnight broke BCAA records in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. She also helped teammates Taylor McKnight, Valerie Wexler, and Jaimie Holmquiest break the 200 medley relay record. She also won 400 free relay with teammates Stephanie Briganty, Jaimie Holmquiest, and Taylor McKnight.

Stoneman Douglas' Kevin Bandy broke his own BCAA record in the 200 freestyle. He broke the 500 freestyle record, too but finished second behind junior Tyler Sell.
