Top football games in Broward this week

CYPRESS BAY (3-0)

AT KATY (Texas) (2-2)

3:30 p.m. Saturday

Cypress Bay coach Mark Guandolo knows the kinds of elements his Lightning will face this weekend when it plays its first game outside of Florida.

Guandolo took Miami Southridge and Chaminade on the road twice apiece during his previous stints as coach. This game will have the added feature of being available on TV nationally on ESPNU.

The Lightning has the look of one of Guandolo's tough teams of old with linebackers Shane Gordon, Austin Gamble and Phil Walker Jr.

But the offense has given it balance.

Cypress Bay's offense is averaging 34 points per game behind the strong running of Jason Douglas (41 carries for 334 yards, 4 TDs), David McKnight and Craig Dee. The Lightning already has beaten some of Broward's top teams in Dillard and Boyd Anderson.

Katy has traditionally been one of Texas' best programs, winning five state titles. But this seems to be the right season for Cypress Bay to catch Katy, which already has a 47-0 loss this year.

Guandolo's teams move to 3-2 all-time on the road.

Prediction: Cypress Bay 27, Katy 24.

DILLARD (2-2) VS.

BOYD ANDERSON (1-2)

7 p.m. Friday, PAL Field

Boyd Anderson came very close to scoring one of its most important wins ever last week in Lakeland. But the Cobras let two leads slip away in a 27-22 defeat.

Now, the Cobras must put the loss behind them and focus on a quality opponent in Dillard. The Panthers bring one of the state's best running backs in Trabis Ward and a major challenge to a defense that has been susceptible to the run.

Boyd Anderson must control the game with its balanced offense and keep Ward off the field as long as possible. Jackie Wilson and Kenny Graham have to dictate the tempo of the game with a mix of passing and running for the Cobras to get a win before heading into district play.

Boyd Anderson has suffered heartbreaking losses this season to Cypress Bay and Lakeland.

This week, it will protect a lead until the final whistle.

Prediction: Boyd Anderson 27, Dillard 23.

DOUGLAS (3-0)

VS. PLANTATION (2-2)

7 p.m. Friday, PAL Field

No David Noshay, no problem so far for Douglas.

The loss of the Eagles' talented starting quarterback that led them to a second-round playoff run a year ago prompted many to think Douglas would fall off from the pack of contenders in Broward this season.

Thanks to a solid running game, Douglas' record is flawless through the first four weeks of the season.

Seniors Dwayne Wilson and Alex Crew have combined for 471 yards and six touchdowns, and senior quarterback Brandon Corona has filled in effectively with three touchdowns passing.

But Coral Glades, Flanagan and Monarch don't compare to Plantation.

Quarterback Imonni Carswell's first big game of the season led the Colonels to a blowout win against upstart Stranahan. That, coupled with Brandon McGee leading a talented defense, should put a blemish on Douglas' hot start.

Prediction: Plantation 24, Douglas 21.
